Ozella “Nanny Zell” Melton McGuire, age 81, passed from this life at her home on June 22, 2026. Ozella was born on October 18, 1944, to the late James and Marilda Smartt Melton. She loved outdoors, especially camping and archery, and embraced every opportunity to enjoy nature. Most of all, she loved her sons and grandchildren, who filled her life with joy and meaning. Nanny Zell was of the Christian faith.
In addition to her parents, Ozella was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth McGuire; son, Kenneth McGuire Jr.; brother, Aulton Melton; and sister, Maxine Kerr.
She is survived by her loving family: sons, Michael Hull (Sherry) McGuire and Jonathan Shane (Cheryl) McGuire; brothers, Clyde (Ernie) Melton and Ray (Shirley) Melton; sisters, Christine Taylor, Mona Melton, and Joy (Wayne) Winnett; grandchildren, Kellsea (Nathan) McCormick, Kenlyn (Rylie) McGuire, Mattie Kathryn McGuire, Maddison (Jessie) Sandell, and Mason Blaylock; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, Jayllah, Sawyer, Elias, Titus, and Laurel. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends also survive.
Per Nanny Zell’s wishes she will be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 27, 2026, at 1:00pm in the Layne Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ray Melton officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday June 27, 2026, from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm.
