Oleta Matheny Godwin, age 99 of Albertville, AL, passed away on May 25th, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 75 years, Lenford H. Godwin, an Army Veteran of the Battle of the Bulge in Europe during WWII.
She was also the last of five children of the late Ernest Bradford Matheny and Mattie Alexander Matheny. Her siblings were: a sister, Hazel Snavely, and three brothers, O. A. Matheny, Alexander Matheny, and Hershel A. Matheny.
She is survived by her three sons Lenford Nelson Godwin (Sarah), Michael Orville Godwin (Charlotte), all of the Albertville area, and Thomas Bradford Godwin (Lynn) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She is also survived by her grandchildren; a grandson Brad Godwin of Tennessee, a step grandson Mike Cook of Michigan; five granddaughters; Katherine Moore of Virginia, Amy Arnold of Northport, Al.; Allison Disbrow of Mississippi, Kymberly Godwin of Memphis TN, and Jessica Godwin of Birmingham, Al.; two step granddaughters Wanda Riles of Mississippi, and Carla Burks of Douglas, Alabama. She always considered her step-grandchildren as her bonus grandchildren and loved them dearly. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, four nieces, three nephews, and a very special sister-in-law, Lynn Matheny of Huntsville, AL. several cousins and other relatives and a host of friends, all of whom were very special to her.
She was a member of Solitude Baptist Church for many years and a past member of Rod Bryant’s Sunday School Class.
She lived in Marshall County all her life, having been born while her parents lived on the banks of the Tennessee River before the Guntersville Dam was built, and she had a lot of memories of her childhood there. She even wrote down some of those memories for her family.
She also worked as an Official Court Reporter for the 27th Judicial Circuit in Marshall County for many years, most of that time working for the late Judge Clark E. Johnson Jr.
Funeral Services will be at Adams Brown Funeral Home in Albertville, AL, on Sunday, May 31st, 2026, with a visitation beginning at 1:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm. Burial to follow at Marshall Memorial Gardens.
