Charlene Sparks Griggs, of Carbon Hill, passed away at her home on May 6, 2026, at the age of 88. She is interred in Scott Cemetery.
She was a coal miner for 23 years. Her friends who’ve seen her roof bolting underground called her Charlie. Her children called her mom. Everyone else called her Granny.
She could give the best hugs and talk for hours on her front porch. She cherished her family and loved inviting anyone who came down her road to her table to share a homemade meal. The people she’s helped encourage with food, shelter, money, and time are too many to count. To know her was to love her, and while our hearts are broken, they are also full of the beautiful memories she left us.
The immediate family would like to extend a special thank you to Trezur Tidwell, Ingrid Mansell, and Covenant Caregiving staff for their care and compassion this past year.
She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Luther Griggs; children, Steven Griggs & Thomas Wayne Griggs; parents, Elmer Robert Sparks and Dora Nancy Jane Harris Sparks; brothers, Elmer Lee Sparks & Clifton Wayne Sparks; sister, Lois McGaughy.
She is survived by her partner, Howard Lee Morgan; child, Tammy Lee Griggs; granddaughter, Lora Leigh Griggs-Statham (Matthew); sisters, Linda Ann Smith, Imogene Drake; good as gold pet, Scooter and a host of nieces and nephews.
