Maurice Guss Hasenbein, “Slim”, of Cullman went to be with the Lord on January 18, 2020, at Cullman Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
He was born February 20, 1955, in Cullman, the son of Maximillian J. Hasenbein and Lois Hankey-Hasenbein. Maurice attended Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and went to their school. During his illness, he felt the prayers offered by the parishioners eased his suffering. He also attended Cullman High School.
Maurice was an avid sportsman; taking enjoyment by regularly partaking in fishing and hunting trips. He harnessed a contemplative nature; often saying that being surrounded by nature brought him closest to God.
Maurice was a loving family man and spent as much time with family as he could; from long, meaningful talks with his children and wife, to joining his father for daily lunch.
Aside from caring for his family, Maurice deeply cherished his country. He joined the army where he specialized in demolition and heavy equipment. Afterwards, Maurice pursued a career in diesel mechanics.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife, Laurie; daughter, Amy Leonard, and husband, Jason; sons, Max and Michael, and their wives, Christena and Rachel; sister, Julia Hasenbein-Bagley; nephew, Chris Bagley; grandsons, Tyler and Brodie; and multiple cousins.
Visitation will be held at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home on Sunday, January 26, from 6-8 p.m. with the Rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m. The funeral will be held Monday, January 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cullman. Interment will be at Center Grove Church Cemetery immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, The Alabama Wildlife Federation, Church Organ Fund, or The Humane Society.
