D.5.1.24 Edgar Taylor.jpg Funeral services for Chief Edgar David Taylor, age 73, of Decatur will be Thursday, May 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Holmes Chapel of Decatur Baptist Church with Brother Joe McKaig officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at Decatur Baptist Church. Shelton Funeral Home will be directing the funeral. He was a member of Decatur Baptist Church.

Chief Edgar Taylor was born on February 5, 1951 to Pershing Melvin and Ruby Louise Taylor. He died on April 28, 2024. He graduated from Athens State College. Chief Taylor began his career with the Decatur Police Department in December, 1974. Over the years, Taylor rose through the ranks and served in numerous capacities throughout his career including patrol, CID and the training division. He graduated from the 196th Session of the F.B.I. Academy in 1996.

Taylor was sworn in as Chief of Police in July 2011. He held his rank until retiring in 2016 after 41 years in law enforcement.

Chief Taylor was instrumental in starting the DPD’s Special Response Team and was the forefront of advocating for the Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Carol Taylor; sisters, Judy Glover (Terry) and Carolyn Taylor; children, Lane Barnes, Edgar Taylor (Anna), Greg Barnes, Jeb Taylor (Rebecca); grandchildren, Skylar Taylor (Samantha), Sabrina Taylor, Blake Barnes, Cole Barnes, Ethan Taylor; aunt, Susan Rodgers Taylor; niece, Rebekah Bolin (Heath); great-nieces, Stephanie Bolin, Allanah White; great-nephew, Caleb Stanford.

Pallbearers will be Terry White, Roger Huntzinger, John Bradford, Steve Condo, Kevin Hunter, and Bill Darby.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Morgan County Special Olympics or Hospice Family Care of Huntsville.
