HUNTSVILLE- TVA , along with several other agencies are participating in International Archaeology Day to help communities learn about archaeology and the imprtance of protecting these resources.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, officials from the Archaeology Institute of America, Redstone Arsenal, and the Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research along with Oakville Indian Mounds Museum, Alabama Archaeological Society and the Alabama National Guard with Huntsville City Schools’ Earthscope will meet Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 pm at Lowe Mill, 2211 Seminole Drive, Huntsville, Alabama.
Started by the American Institute of Archaeology, International Archaeology 
Day seeks to raise public awareness of archaeology as a discipline, profession and resource; to emphasize that archaeology is everywhere; and to unite the larger archaeological community through a focal event.
TVA manages a significant number of archaeological sites in the region that have made important contributions to the understanding of prehistory in the Southeast. TVA is participating in International Archaeology Day as part of its Thousand Eyes outreach program, which helps communities learn about archaeology and how to protect these resources.
The event is free and open to the public . The event includes artifact identification by Redstone Arsenal and will help the public record archaeological sites and will accept donated artifacts (particulary those collected on public lands). The Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research will give tours of their lab and facilities which are located at Lowe Mill. Oakville Indian Mounds Museum will provide “atlatl” (Native American spear thrower) demonstrations and competitions. Tim Baker will give flint-knapping demonstrations. Huntsville City Schools’ Earthscope will offer children’s activities with Native American games. The Alabama Archaeological Society will have artifacts as will the Archaeological Institute of America. There will be poster presentations provided by The Alabama National Guard and TVA will provide information on TVA Archaeology and the Thousand Eyes Program and childrens activity on pottery decoration.
