Wanda Faye Chambers, age 63, after 31 days of fighting Covid, breathed her last breath at 11:10 AM on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at Huntsville Hospital Critical Care Unit number 2 in the presence of her good friend and honorary sister Linda Ray Williams. Wanda beat Covid, and yet she died from heart Atrial fibrillation (A-fib) where her heart would race almost uncontrollably, and pneumonia caused by the Covid.
Wanda was born in Guntersville, Alabama on Monday, December 9, 1957 to Clarence Chambers and Virginia (Vergie) Riley and was raised in the Mill Village area of Guntersville. She was active in the community where she lived, serving for a few years on the resident council at the apartment complex where she had lived, planning activities like Bingo for the residents and looking after their needs. She absolutely loved the color purple, and surrounded herself with many things of that color. She loved to draw and color whimsy and fantasy, both on paper and online. She also loved to play online games. She would often listen to music and loved Christian, light jazz, popular, and country music. She loved her stuffies (stuffed animals) and porcelain dolls, and would display them in her home.
Words cannot describe what a good-hearted woman she was. Wanda was loved by everyone and she loved everyone as well. She was always willing to help others when she could. Wanda enjoyed laughing and having a good time with her best friends. Wanda took Carlos and Cristi in (at different times) when they had nowhere to go. She was also the best God-grandmother any child could ever want. Wanda loved three-year-old Calena very much. When Wanda was sad, lonely, or depressed, she would always video call with Calena.
Wanda loved to cook and she had a dream to open her own restaurant, but was unable to do so. She was so proud of her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was baptized into the Sparkman Ward on April 6, 1990. She is survived by her nephew Billy Chambers, Junior of Guntersville, Alabama, in Guntersville, and by her son Billy Chambers Sellers of Selma, Alabama who was adopted out when he was a young child, but they kept in touch through the years.
Since she had so few living relatives, she would informally adopt many friends as honorary family members – she had honorary sisters, honorary sons, and honorary daughters. She also had a boyfriend she adored, Michael, who lived in Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Billy “Scooter”; and her half-brother Buddy of Guntersville, Alabama.
Wanda will be remembered as a good hearted woman who loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and deeply loved her family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 11 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1297 Slaughter Road, Madison, Alabama. The memorial service will be broadcast on Zoom for those who prefer the live stream. There will be a friends and family visit at 10 AM before the memorial service.
Wanda will be missed dearly. She will always be in our hearts. We may have lost a friend, aunt, God-grandmother, honorary sister, and honorary daughter, but we have gained an angel. Wanda has no more pain and no more worries. The gates of heaven have welcomed her. Wanda Chambers, we miss you and love you dearly!
