Walter Lewis Jones, Jr., 72, of Atlanta, died Feb. 14, 2014.
Mr. Jones was born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., and was the son of the late Walter Lewis Jones and Nan Stuart Jones. He graduated from the University of Alabama and received his MBA from Harvard University. In recent years he was honored as a Distinguished Fellow at the University of Alabama School of Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict as a 1st Lieutenant. Mr. Jones was instrumental in establishing the Coffeen Land Trust, enjoyed a successful international career, and eventually retired as president of Pine Chemicals Trade Associates. He loved music, history, wood carving, art, laughing, reading and traveling.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Jones.
Survivors include his, wife of 51 years, Jane Frederick Jones; son, Walter L. “Tre” Jones, III (McCall); daughter, Jennifer R. Jones (Bill); grandchildren, Eleanor, Virginia and Marjorie Jones; sister, Sarah McCleskey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dementia Research, Office of Development at Emory University, 201 Dowman Dr., Atlanta, GA 30322, or the University of Alabama School of Engineering in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at 2 o’clock at The Cathedral of St. Philip. Arrangements by H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, Atlanta, Ga. (404) 851-9900.
