Violet Woodle Washington – Obituary

Violet Woodle Washington passed away on October 2, 2015. Born March 30, 1926, she celebrated her 89th birthday at the Galleria Woods Retirement Community in Hoover. Mrs. Washington was the daughter of Hughey Allen Woodle and Nettie Sue Cox Woodle of Clemson, SC.

Her life was dedicated to caring for her family and creating a beautiful home for them. She graduated from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC, in 1946 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics and completed her coursework for a master’s degree at Pennsylvania State University.
She was a longtime member and served as an elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Decatur and in recent years was a member of Riverchase United Methodist Church in Hoover.
In addition to caring for her family, she spent much time studying the Bible. She began Bible study groups at Westminster Presbyterian Church and later with residents of Galleria Woods Retirement Community. Through the years she created many beautiful gifts with her cross-stitching, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and other needle arts. Violet was always a voracious reader and organized a number of reading clubs. She enjoyed traveling and walking the Tennessee River trails at Wheeler Wildlife Refuge in Decatur with her husband.
She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Julie Marie Richardson. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, William Harold Washington, Jr.; a brother, Hughey Allen Woodle, Jr. (Sue) of Midlothian, VA; two daughters, Nancy Washington Clemmons (Ron) of Mountain Brook and Jeannie Washington Richardson (Bill) of Forest, VA; and two sons, Harold Cox Washington (Pamela Gordon) of Lawrence, KS, and William Hughey Washington (Patti) of Hoover. Grandchildren, William Scott Clemmons (Amy) of Vestavia Hills and Susan Clemmons Smith (Lee) of Louisville, KY, William Curtis Richardson, III (Jenny) of Madison Heights, VA, Melinda Richardson Mohr (Brian) of Atlanta, GA, Everett Cox Washington of Atlanta, GA, Rachel Denise Washington of Hoover, Li Gordon-Washington and Mei Gordon-Washington of Lawrence, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews. Great-grandchildren, Callie, Chandler, Charlotte and Collier Clemmons, and Austin Kimberly of Vestavia Hills, Landis and Clary Kate Smith of Louisville, KY, and Austin Richardson of Madison Heights, VA.
Visitation will be held today, October 7, 2015 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at The Wood Mortuary in Greer, SC. Graveside services will be held today at Wood Memorial Park in Duncan, SC. A service in celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 15 in the chapel at Galleria Woods Retirement Community, 3850 Galleria Woods Drive, Hoover, AL.
