One of the best cooks many of us have ever known stepped out of the kitchen on June 28, 2022. Vickie Lynne Hughes Barrett – loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and Grammie extraordinaire – will be deeply missed by those she leaves behind.

Vickie met her husband, Greg, on her 20th birthday and they celebrated almost 40 years of marriage that went by all too quickly. However, there was much love and many good times squeezed into those years. Together they had three children: Amanda, Grant, and Adam who were all fortunate enough to grow up knowing just how loved they were by their mom and how wonderful she truly was. She is now reunited with her son, Grant, whom she tenderly cared for while he was here with us. Amanda and her husband, Matt Williamson, will shower Vickie’s two beloved grandchildren, Ellie and Parker, with all of their Grammie’s love for the rest of their lives. Adam – her “funniest child” as she would refer to him – will likely be keeping her laughing from Heaven at the things he says. Most importantly, he will continue to make her proud with his caring nature and the acts of kindness he shows for others.

We can credit John and Barbara Hughes for raising the beautiful, sweet, caring, and wonderful woman we all loved. Her kindness will be remembered by her parents; her brother, Scott Hughes; her mother-in-law, Irma Barrett; sister-in-law, Suzette Martin; plus many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Vickie spent 20+ years with Huntsville City Schools proving that school cafeteria food can be delicious when love is your key ingredient. Several of those years were at Weatherly Elementary, where she cherished the family of friends she made.

In her short retirement, she enjoyed her favorite role as Grammie. What a pleasure it was to witness the immense love she had for her grandbabies – and they for her!

We will celebrate Vickie’s life on Thursday, June 30, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4-6pm with a service directly following the visitation. We encourage you to wear bright, happy colors as a reflection of the light she brought into our lives and the ripples of love she put into this world.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
