HUNTSVILLE-the Huntsville Police Department has released an update on the Officer involved shooting that took place on Saturday, June 18:
“OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING UPDATE
The Huntsville Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday, June 18th at 1004 Jordan Lane. The white male suspect, 34 year old William Thomas Hennessey of Huntsville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Huntsville Police responded to a call at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday to assist Alabama State Troopers in locating a possible drunk driver in a blue Volkswagen. A citizen was following the car, and the car was believed to be the same one that had struck mailboxes on Highway 53 a short time earlier. Officers and Troopers located the car in the parking lot of 1004 Jordan Lane unoccupied. Officers checked the area and were not able to locate a driver. Minutes later a Trooper was flagged down by citizens saying a man, who turned out to be Hennessey, was back at the car. A Trooper approached the passenger side of the Volkswagen and a struggle ensued. At some point Hennessey pulled a gun and the Trooper continued to struggle with him. A Huntsville Police Officer was passing by, saw the struggle, and rushed to assist the Trooper. Hennessey continued to fight with both the Officer and the Trooper and refused to drop the weapon. The Huntsville Police Officer fired his weapon and Hennessey died at the scene as a result. Neither the Trooper nor the Officer were injured. The incident was captured on Huntsville Police department body worn cameras as well as in-car video recording systems.
The investigation is ongoing and the findings will be presented to an Incident Review Board in the coming weeks. The Review Board will consist of members of the Huntsville Police Department, District Attorney’s Office, Alabama Bureau of Investigation, and members of the Police Citizens Advisory Council among others. Once the Incident Review Board is concluded the official findings will be released.”
