Update from Governor Kay Ivey on Bills Signed

MONTGOMERY-On Friday, May 21 the governor signed a few criminal justice bills into law, including: House Bill 106 (England), Legislative Prison Oversight Committee; Senate Bill 221 (Chambliss), creates Deputy Commissioner of Prison Rehabilitation within the Department of Corrections, creates Deputy Director for Parolee Rehabilitation within Board of Pardons and Paroles, creates study commission; Senate Bill 323 (Chambliss), provides deduction of a prisoners sentence upon completion of qualifying programs; and House Bill 137 (Brown), provide for victim notification and certain rights to victims, creates Sexual Assault Task Force.

Governor Ivey issued the following statement:

“Criminal justice reform is not only necessary, but is a top priority of my Administration. I am proud to sign these bills into law as we work to prepare inmates to reenter society as productive citizens.” – Governor Kay Ivey

This morning, Governor Ivey signed the General Fund, also known as House Bill 309.

“Even in a pandemic, Alabama showed resilience, and our economy is bouncing back. Other states have had to make cuts, but because of our fiscally conservative and targeted approach, we are strategically investing $2.4 billion into essential services across the state. I commend Rep. Clouse and the Alabama Legislature for their good work on our budgets.” – Governor Kay Ivey
