We need writers (or writing teams), directors, a bunch of actors, and techies. We can also use volunteers to help with things throughout the process. Participants should be high school aged or older.
It costs nothing but time to participate. And it doesn’t even take a lot of that! We will begin on the evening of April 12 and end about 10 pm on April 13.
If you are interested, please visit the Historic Zodiac Playhouse Facebook page to join the 24 Hour Plays group. There is a short registration form at the top of the page. You may also call 256-768-5586 or email us at administrator@
On April 13 at 7:30pm, The Z will present 6 brand-new short plays as the public performance of The 24 Hour Plays: The Z. We can’t tell you what the plays are about, because they aren’t written yet! It will be a surprise for all of us!
On the evening before the performance, we will gather 6 writers, 6 directors, and as many actors as we can find to begin the process. After a short meet & greet, the writers will be sequestered to write a 10-minute play each by 6 am the following morning. The directors and actors will begin rehearsing those scripts at 8 am and will present them to YOU that evening at 7:30 with no scripts in hand.
Tickets are $10 and available in advance at www.TheZTickets.Store or at the door beginning 30 minutes prior to curtain. Come out and join us for a night of fun and surprises!
Join us at The Z for an acting masterclass, led by Alex Bates, culminating in a cabaret performance for the public.
You will spend Friday evening working through exercises that help break down the walls that keep you, as an actor, from experiencing a true connection with your audience. Throughout the evening you will get individualized attention from the instructor, using those exercises and perpared pieces.
On Saturday afternoon, you will work through your prepared piece(s), applying the techniques you learned the evening before. That evening, you will perform your piece(s), cabaret-style, for your family, friends, and friends of the theater.
Alex Bates hails from Florence, Alabama, and attended Jacksonville State University where she started a Cabaret-style theatre for Alpha Psi Omega called Cocky Guerrilla Theatre. Alex has been seen at Old Creamery Theatre, Great Plains Theatre, Bluegate Musicals, Brightstar Touring Theatre, Birmingham Children’s Theatre and in several historical outdoor dramas. Some of her favorite credits include Kate in “Kiss Me Kate”, Rosa Parks in “The Birmingham Bus Boycott”, Sylvia in “All Shook Up”, Mrs. Gottlieb in “Dead Man’s Cell Phone”, and Motormouth Maybelle in “Hairspray”. www.alexandriabates.weebly.com
Cost for the workshop is $25 and includes the workshop on Friday, March 29 from 6-9 pm and Saturday, March 30 from 1-4, followed by the cabaret performance at 7pm. You will need to bring at least one monologue, story, or song that you have already memorized prior to the workshop. (You may bring more than one, but are not guaranteed time to work on/perform more than one.)
To register, go to www.TheZTickets.Store. Agest 14-adult. Space is limited, so register today!
Auditions for Grease will be held on Thursday, April 18 from 6-8 pm and Saturday, April 20 from 10 am – noon. As a Second Chance Production, everyone auditioning should be age 40 or older. Auditionees should be prepared to sing a song from the show, do a cold reading from the script, and learn a simple dance combination.
Second Chance Productions, a new branch of the Historic Zodiac Playhouse, will present atypically cast premiere theatre productions, calling for ages 40 and up to play roles they would never be cast in, because they have otherwise aged or “typed” out of them.
Production dates are June 20-24, 2019. Rehearsals will begin at the first of May. Juli Martin will direct. Roles are available for 9 males and 8 females, plus ensemble. “Grease” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., a Concord Theatricals Company.
