TUSCUMBIA-Upcoming events presented by the Tennessee Valley Arts Association include a film, galery talk and workshops in the upcoming weeks.

The Tennessee Valley Arts Associatin presents the film ‘The Pushouts’ about  Victor Rios who was a high school dropout, gang member and three-time felon by the time he was 15. Now, he is a tenured professor and national thought leader on the school-to-prison pipeline.

Rios’ story will be front and center in the feature-length documentary The Pushouts, which reframes dropouts not as failures, but as products of a broken system. Eschewing common narratives that rely on tragedy and victimization, The Pushouts is at its core a story of hope, resilience, and the power of mentorship.

The Pushouts will be screened at 7 p.m., April 26 at the Ritz Theatre, 111 W. Third St., Sheffield. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with a cash bar and refreshments. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and TVAA members.

The organization 12-for-Life will have a booth in the Encore Room. 12-for-Life is a partnership between Southwire and Florence City Schools that finds at-risk youth and puts them to work for Southwire while they finish high school.

The Pushouts producer and co-director Dawn Valadez will give a brief talk about the artistry of film making prior to the film and a Q&A following the screening.

The Gallery Talk will be by history scholar Jackie Childress who will present her research applying photogrammetryImage result for Martin petroglyph, a local prehistoric stone carving colbert county alabama to the Martin petroglyph, a local prehistoric stone carving, at 1:30 p.m., Sun., April 28 at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia.

Photogrammetry is an emerging technique that uses digital photography to produce high-resolution 3D images that can be used to record and decipher inscriptions in any type of stone artifact, from statues to monuments to headstones. The technique is especially useful with carvings that have been damaged due to long-term exposure or human activity.

Working in collaboration with UNA faculty and TVAA staff, Childress collected photogrammetric data on the Martin petroglyph in Fall 2018. Her gallery talk will present the results of that analysis.
