Tommy Thompson passed away peacefully Wed Oct 9 at Hospice Family Care. Tommy was born Sept 10,1935 in Frankfort, KY. He was married 61 years to the love of his life, Middie Yager Thompson. He is the son of the late, T. Morris Thompson and Elizabeth Sorg Thompson and he is predeceased by his daughter Anne Elizabeth.

Tommy’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by wife, Middie, son Michael Thompson (Maria), daughter, Laura Thompson Hutchins (David), grandchildren, Thomas Julian, Eliza Anne and Benjamin David and step grandchildren Alexander and Katherine. Also, sister, Dorothy Thompson Simcox; dear nieces, Margaret and Melinda, and many cousins.

Tommy was a 1958 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was a true patriot and served his country with honor through 2 tours in Vietnam. During his distinguished military career Tommy earned the Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal 1st Class; Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm (1st & 2nd Award) Meritorious Service Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Commendation Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Bronze Star Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster. Tommy attended the University of Kentucky prior to entering West Point and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After his retirement in 1979, Tommy and Middie settled in his beloved Huntsville. Tommy was a true civic hero as well. He loved his church and he served with passion in his community.

The celebration of Tommy’s life will be held Friday, October 18th at 1pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Building Fund of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
