Tommy Gerald Emmons, 73, of Sheffield, Ala., passed away on Nov. 20, 2013.
Visitation will be today from 11-1 p.m. at Colbert Memorial Chapel, with funeral services to begin at 1 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will follow at Colbert Memorial Gardens. Brother Bruce Palmer is officiating.
Tommy is predeceased by his parents, Marshell and Cora Emmons; and siblings, Gillus Emmons, Billy Joe Emmons, Mack Emmons, Artie May Carter, Mertie Bratton, and Bobbie Jean Holmes.
He is survived by wife, Joan Emmons, of 53 wonderful years; children, Deborah Webb (Joe Guzik), Barry Emmons (Carol-Lee), and Cody Webb (Shannon Machen); and siblings, Ralph Emmons, Wes Emmons (Donna), Bobby Holmes, and Chinch Marable (Betty); and grandchildren, Nikki Emmons and Izaak Emmons; and faithful companion, Willie Frank.
Pallbearers will be Sammy Carter Jr., Jimmy Bratton, Tony Carter, Wes Holmes, Doug Emmons, and Robbie Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Lansdell, Ray Horton, Dr. Jerry Williams, Bobby Holmes, Charlie Hovater, and Steve Clark.
He played four years of high school football and was captain his senior year. Tommy was chosen All State in 1959 AAA and lettered three years. He also played basketball and was on the disk team.
He played music most of his adult years. He started out with his band New Country with two of his nephews. He later formed the band One Knight Stand Band with his nephew, Sammy Carter, and friends, Ray Horton and Ray Austin. Tommy bought a building in Elgin, Ala. and turned it into a music and dance venue called The Blue Room.
Tommy was a member of IBEW 558 and worked for Sheffield Utilities for two years in DO classes in high school and an additional 32 years following graduation. He worked as a lineman for 30 years and was leadman at the time of his retirement.
