Dr. TJ Chung, a longtime resident of Huntsville, Alabama, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), peacefully passed away Tuesday, September 23rd, after a life dedicated to serving his family, students, and colleagues. He was passionate about education, research, and improving the institutions he served. Renowned for his profound contributions to the field of engineering and physics, Dr. Chung began his academic journey as an instructor at the Korea Military Academy from 1954 to 1959, and later advanced his studies at Oklahoma State University, where he obtained an MS in applied mechanics and a PhD in Soil Mechanics. He fostered a lifelong passion for mechanical and aerospace engineering and physics.
After joining UAH, Dr. Chung became a pivotal figure in the university, serving as Chairman and Director of Engineering from 1978 to 1982. He inspired generations of students, faculty, and researchers through his commitment to knowledge, mentorship, and academic excellence. His career was marked by several published books and scores of scientifically significant articles. He had a dedication to advancing UAH’s and the City of Huntsville’s reputation as a center for science and aerospace technology.
Dr. Chung will be remembered for his kindness, intellectual rigor, and the lasting impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was predeceased by his father, Goo Taek Chung; his mother, Hae Sook Kim; and his brother, Tae Hyun Chung. He is survived by his brother, Tae Yoon Chung; his sister, Hyung Bok Chung; dedicated wife, Wharan Kim Chung; daughter, Arleen (Panos); son, Jason; grandchildren, Stella, Peter, and Theo Sechopoulos, Jason Jr. and Jeb Chung; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews and other extended family members.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Steve Lee officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
