Tilda Jan Sumerel, age 67, of Spruce Pine left for her eternal home on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Tilda had her master’s in education and education specialist. She was an active member of the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma professional women educators and also the Belgreen Alumni Association. She taught school for many years and retired from administration in the Franklin County Schools Central Office. She was a member of Gravel Hill Church of Christ, loved to study the Bible, and enjoyed teaching Bible classes for the children. She enjoyed quilting, crafting, reading, especially mysteries, and was a devoted Alabama fan. She knitted countless numbers of bears for the Mother Bear Project. She loved and cherished her time with her TOPS friends in Russellville. She was a beloved friend and neighbor to all, and she loved her family and friends dearly. She enjoyed writing and contributing to the Franklin County Times and the Red Bay News. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her sister, Ginger Sumerel Guinn (James); nieces and nephew, Ashley Guinn Burchell (Adam), Braxton Guinn (Katie), Casey Guinn Stewart (Trace); great-nieces & nephews, Adley Burchell, Ellynn Burchell, Liles Burchell, Luke Guinn, Sadie Kate Guinn, Brady Stewart, Annaliese Stewart; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leamon Eugene & Shellie (Hester) Sumerel; grandparents, Willard & Inez (Rickard) Sumerel, and Emmons & Elton Hester.
Her visitation will be 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Friday, April 25, 2025, at Spry Memorial Chapel. The funeral will follow in the chapel at 12:00 noon with Roger Johnson, Billy Hurst, and Paul Swindle speaking at the service. The graveside committal will be at 1:00 p.m. at Franklin Memory Gardens.
The pallbearers will be James Guinn, Trace Stewart, Adam Burchell, Gary Hargett, Kenny Hurst, and Frank Mitchell.
