Three new developments announced in downtown Athens

ATHENS – Athens Main Street announced today [Tuesday, July 13, 2021] three new developments coming to historic downtown.

The first new development is That SO Art.

An Athens native, owner Sara Ogles decided to open a brick-and-mortar store after having much success online. The new art studio will be in the old Dobbs’ Shoe Service building at 110 W. Market Street. Sara’s passions include whimsical custom watercolor home, church, and business portraits, as well as colorful abstract art to brighten your space. If you’d like to see some of her work in person, original portraits are currently displayed inside Chick-Fil-A and CEI Bookstore.

While renovations are being complete in the building, patrons can shop That’s SO Art online at https://thatssoart.com.

We all know how fast the housing market is booming in Athens and Limestone County. We are excited to welcome EXIT Realty Downhome to downtown Athens. The new real estate firm is located at 115 South Marion Street just across from the courthouse. Owner/Broker Felicia McGee is excited to bring her firm to downtown Athens.

“I chose EXIT because of the vision they have for creating opportunities and changing lives both of the realtors we employee and the clients we represent,” said McGee. “EXIT is locally owned but internationally strong.”

The last exciting announcement today is Athens Alehouse and Cellar opening in August. The Alehouse will be located at 111 West Washington Street. Owners Lori and Ken Hill are both Limestone County natives and are excited to bring their concept to the community. The Alehouse is a part of the Arts & Entertainment district so patrons can grab a blue cup and walk up to the square.

“We are going to feature charcuterie, wine slushies, beer on draft with self-serve systems, and more,” Ken Hill said. “We hope to bring some value to the Square and we think it will be a nice deal.”

“We are growing in the right way in downtown,” said Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson. “Our historic buildings are desired by local business owners that in return draw local people back to downtown.”

“We also have a great mix of businesses that draw outside visitors to the merchants and restaurants in the entertainment district,” said Richardson.

“On behalf of Mayor Ronnie Marks and the city council of Athens, Alabama, I want to congratulate you all and applaud your courage and your entrepreneurship,” said Amy Golden Special Projects Manager for the City of Athens. “We are so pleased with you and your efforts in Athens to make us a bigger, better, and stronger community.”

Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly is also thrilled to see the growth in the county seat.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy and employ a large portion of the working population,” said Daly. “We are excited to see the opening of these three small businesses and look forward to watching their success in our community.
