Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce 2023 State of Education Address – The 2023 State of Education Address serves as an opportunity for the community to hear from administrators and educators from various local schools. This event will have speakers with Athens City Schools, Limestone County Schools, Athens Bible School, Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, and the Career Technical Center. Higher Education institutions Calhoun Community College and Athens State will also be featured. 17th Annual Athens AL Storytelling Festival: Oct 24–28, 2023 – Imagine a crisp fall weekend spent listening to stories of adventure and excitement…a place where memories and magic are captured and spun into tales that make you laugh and cry. Thursday Night Talent – Top 6 Competition – Event Sponsor: Athens-Limestone Hospital – Location: Eastside of the Limestone County Courthouse. Do not forget a lawn chair. In no particular order, the top 6 vocalists include: Mr. Simmons, Devin Simmons, Jennifer Simmons, Zami Maré, Kaylee Jordan, and Katie Call (People’s Choice) On Oct 26, 2023, beginning at 6 p.m. the top six will perform one song each. Judges will pick three finalists. The final three will perform their second song selection. Judges will then pick one winner for a $1,000 prize. Nora Fleming Personal Appearance & Signing Party – International entrepreneur Nora Fleming will be making her first trip to Alabama for a signing at Crawford’s Gifts in downtown Athens. This event will be Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Patrons will have the opportunity to take a photo with Nora and get new pieces just in time for the holiday season. Steve Smith Memorial Golf Tournament – October 27, 2023, 10 a.m. Registration/Putting Contest Begins – 11 a.m. Shot Gun Start at Canebrake Club of Athens. STEVE SMITH, a lifelong resident of Athens, graduated from Athens High in 1968. He attended Calhoun Community College, graduating in 1970 before transferring to UNA, formerly known as Florence State University, receiving his B.A. in Business Administration. Steve’s career spanned some 40+ years in finance and banking. He served his community well, holding many board positions over the years, including the Athens Limestone Hospital board for 27 years (Board Chair for 7 years), United Way board member, founding member of Athens Limestone Hospital Foundation, and serving the Calhoun Foundation board for numerous years.
