FLORENCE-The 21st Annual Urban Forestry and Horticulture Conference, will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Cross Point Church of Christ. City of Florence entities co-sponsoring the conference include the Office of the Mayor, City Council, Tree Commission, Beautification Board and the Urban Forestry/Horticulture Department.
The theme of this year’s event is “The Beauty of Natives.” Two specialty tracks will be offered this year: an Urban Forestry and Pesticide track and a Horticulture track. Participants can receive recertification points and CEU’s.
Keynote speaker is Harry E. Wallace, Owner of Little Cypress Natives. He will speak on The Beauty of Native Trees and Shrubs.
Urban Forestry and Pesticides will be presented together. Presentations will highlight the Emerald Ash Borer and its implications for the Urban Forest, managing weeds in turf and the Urban Forest, Pesticide Safety and use, pesticide dilution, calibration and application, and the top twenty pest resistant trees.
The Horticulture track offers presentations on using native versus invasive plants in the landscape, native stone in the landscape, gardening under glass, TVA Whitey Hall Native Plant Garden, and a focus on native trees and shrubs in the urban landscape.
Local vendors will exhibit a wide variety of products and services for landscaping and home gardening.
The conference has been a longtime favorite with both the public and professionals in urban forestry and horticulture.
The hours of the conference are 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. The cost is $45, which includes lunch. Late registration fee is $50.00.
