Sudie Margaret Welch Johnson

Sudie Margaret Welch Johnson passed away on Thursday.  She was 75.

She spent her early years in Dillon, South Carolina where for a time lived with her aunt and namesake (Sudie Herring) to help her run her motel on the 501 highway that runs through the small town of Dillon.

Sudie moved to Huntsville, Al with her family in the late 50s and went to Lincoln school. She met Robert Johnson through friends and they were married on July 9, 1962. She has worked for many businesses over the years including sales for WBHP, WAAY (radio) and Cashier at her mother’s grocery store in Huntsville. Her family moved to the Hazel Green community in 1970.

By 1982 they had saved enough money to buy a house in the Meridianville/Toney area where they remained for the next 40 years. In her later years she became known for her karaoke talents and could be found singing on occasion at one of Monkey Childers’ clubs. A fun and boisterous personality, the feisty redhead met many people from all walks of life and was known to be the life of the party.

She is survived by her Husband of 60 years Robert Allen Johnson her son Robert William Johnson (Sharon), daughter Morgan Feltner (Elijah); Five grandchildren, Bradley Johnson, Chelsea Yeager, Rayna Feltner, Sarah-Kathryn Feltner, Talya Feltner and one great grand child, Winnie Sue Johnson; Her brothers, Russell Welch and Richard Welch. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father Beatrice (née Jackson) Leonard and Harry Franklin Welch and by one infant brother, Harry Franklin Welch Jr.

Hazel Green Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and will host a gathering of friends on Sunday from 4pm to 6pm at the funeral home.
