Jackie was born on July 15, 1939 to Walter Waymon (Jack) Springer and Merida Will Harper Springer in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. After graduating from Tuscaloosa High School in 1957, she attended the University of Alabama.
Jackie and Drew Newman of Tuscaloosa met while working at JC Penney’s in college and were married on May 24, 1958. They settled in Huntsville, Alabama and were blessed with two daughters.
Jackie was a member of Highlands United Methodist Church for 46 years until the doors closed in 2012 when they transferred their membership to Holmes Street United Methodist Church. While at Highlands, she sung in the chancellor choir, led a youth choir, supported many UMYF activities, and served on the Hospitality committee. Jackie retired from the Huntsville City School System where she worked as a dietician and lunchroom manager serving in 3 different elementary and middle schools.
She was so proud of her family – her husband, daughters and grandchildren. She enjoyed family camping trips, holiday events and beach vacations. She loved playing cards and games with her family, watching Disney and Harry Potter movies with the grandkids, and cheering everyone on in their academic and extracurricular activities. “Nannie” was always present at all the grandkids’ significant moments, and it is well documented in her picture frames and our memories.
Jackie never met a stranger. She was always making a connection with someone from her roots of Gordo or Tuscaloosa, Alabama no matter where she traveled. She was known for being a “sweet lady with beautiful blue eyes and an infectious laugh.” She was a huge Alabama Football fan and collected many Bama shirts, hounds tooth clothing and National Championship gear (Roll Tide!). She was proud of her roots!
Jackie’s interests included playing hymns on the piano and listening to Gospel music. She loved watching British comedies, westerns, musicals, Peanuts cartoons and movies. She was an avid Elvis fan.  She also had deep compassion for children and animals, and she often supported charitable organizations for these causes. She was adopted by many as an honorary mom or grandmother, and she will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at noon on Saturday, January 14th at Berryhill Funeral Home following an 11 AM visitation. Pastor Eddie Johnson will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Huntsville.
Active Pallbearers are Drew Barhydt, Allen Finkenaur, Zach Morgan, Zach Drummond, Ric McKinney, Johnny Johnson and Reid Golden.
Honorary Pallbearers are Lloyd Newman, Curt Byard, Fred Barhydt, Glenn Smith, Brian Smith, Chase Prater RN and William Hill RN.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her home church, Holmes Street United Methodist Church (www.holmesstreetumc.org).
