ATHENS-More than 40 students in Athens and Limestone County schools focused on their resolutions for 2017 as part of an art contest conducted by the Athens Mayor’s Youth Commission.
The Youth Commissioners are responsible for the Share the Art Contest, which includes developing themes, deciding which artwork will be on display and choosing a grand prize winner. The current theme is “The Art of New Year Words.” Student artists were encouraged to incorporate words associated with New Year’s and resolutions in their art.
“We received a variety of artwork from mixed media to photography to drawings,” said Youth Commission Mentor Holly Hollman. “The students’ New Year’s resolutions varied from wanting to become better at sports and making better grades to focusing on solidarity, loving yourself and meeting new people.”
The grand prize winner in the high school division was Presley Carroll of Athens High School who created a mixed media piece depicting a handshake with the two hands comprised of numerous skin tones. The title is “Meet New People.”
The grand prize winner in the K-8 division was Mary Kate Green from Athens Intermediate School with her drawing called “My Resolutions.” She drew a New Year’s Eve party hat surrounded by resolutions that encouraged her to be a better friend, love more, make better grades and try more activities.
Carroll and Green will receive $15 each. The grand prize winners and the other top entries are on display at Athens City Hall’s Art Corner in the front foyer. Athens City Hall debuted its Art Corner in November when the Youth Commission kicked off its first art theme. The Youth Commission utilized funds from Dekko Foundation to create the Share the Art Contest.
