ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement on a stolen van and the arrest of a suspect:

“On June 20, 2016 the police department received a call that a van had been stolen in the 700 block of North Jefferson Street.

The owner of the van told officers she left the keys in the van when she got out. She also told officers she saw Dexter James Pitman just before the van was stolen.

The van was recovered a short time later on HWY 127 after it ran out of gas. Investigators located a witness that was able to identify Pitman with the van.

A warrant was obtained for Pitman on yesterday. Early this morning Pitman was arrested on the warrant. Pitman was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail. “
