LAUDERDALE COUNTY-On March 21, 2026, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 5000 block of County Road 10 after receiving a report of possible human remains discovered in a wooded area behind a residence. Lauderdale County investigators secured the scene and confirmed that the remains were human.
With assistance from the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, investigators carefully excavated the remains. The Lauderdale County Coroner then transported them to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for autopsy and forensic examination.
Following extensive forensic analysis, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences determined that DNA evidence recovered with the remains matched a profile in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), positively identifying the deceased as Robert Deshawn Childers. At this time the manner of death remains undetermined.
Robert Childers was reported missing on September 19, 2016, from the Cloverdale community in Lauderdale County. After nearly a decade of uncertainty, this identification finally provides answers to a family that has patiently and steadfastly awaited his return.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the Childers family and hopes that the identification of their loved one brings a measure of peace during this difficult time.
The investigation into the death of Robert Deshawn Childers remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office by email at dhogue@lauderdalecountyal.gov or by phone at 256-760-5761.
