Six Reported Dead…Two Confirmed After Tornadoes Slam The Athens Area

tornadoATHENS-According to reports, Limestone County Commissioner Bill Latimer said on Monday night that four people were killed in his district, southeast of Athens. This along with confirmed reports by Sheriff Mike Blakely that  two people have died west of Athens at Billy Bob Trailer Park on U.S. 72 in Coxey community.

Four people were injured in Clements and have been  transported to Athens Hospital. The Clements Fire Department and Clements High School both took a direct hit. The  Bay Hill Marina also had significant damage and one person was injured, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

U.S. 72 from Blackburn Road to Elk River at the Limestone/Lauderdale County line  has been closed. It will only be open for emergency vehicles photo 4according to authorities. It has not been made known when U.S. 72 will reopen.

Athens have 11,900 without power, according to Mayor Ronnie Marks, and the number is climbing. There are over 100 poles down and 86 of them are on U.S. 72.

Traffic lights are out sporadically in city. City police do not have manpower to direct traffic at all of these areas. Slow down and treat these as 4-way stop. If it is not an emergency, you need to stay home.
