FLORENCE – TheFreeDictionary.com defines, “GONER” like this:

a person or thing that is dead, lost, or past recovery.

Tarkett has been around in one name or the other (NAFCO) for over 40 years. The plant manufactures flooring. It employs around 175 workers. And, for awhile there, it looked all of that was coming to an ignominious end. Tarkett didn’t want that. Nobody wanted that.

Then the Shoals Economic Development Authority (SEDA) got together with the company and, as usual, worked some magic. At today’s meeting of the Shoals Industrial Development Committee (SIDC), which is made up of area-wide elected officials and controls the purse-strings of millions of dollars of Shoals gas-tax money, approved funding $250-thousand to help Tarkett jumpstart plant renovation and expansion. This action today ensures that not only will the plant stay in The Shoals, it will actually expand and bring in another production line from the Houston area. Tarkett’s financial outlay is expected to reach at least $27.6-million. The expansion promises to add another 120 jobs.

After the Tarkett request for funding was approved, the SIDC moved on to another project, this time involving a new company which is moving into the Shoals Research Airpark.  CBC INGS AMERICA is building its very first American production facility in Muscle Shoals. CBC is closely connected with North American Lighting, and will be their next-door neighbor on 13 acres once the facility is operational. The SIDC today approved reimbursement of nearly $136-thousand for infrastructure matching funds that the City of Muscle Shoals has committed to the project. It involves extending water and sewer lines and some roadwork. CBC INGS AMERICA produces injection molded plastic components that North American Lighting and other manufactures use in their production lines. Their investment is stated in the approval document to be $25-million. The company expects to hire 125 new employees.
