FLORENCE – The September First Fridays will celebrate area First Responders as part of the event that will take place Friday, September 2, from 5-8 p.m. on Court Street in downtown Florence.
“Our first responders are a vital part of the safety not only of First Fridays but also of our community,” said Belinda Duke, the event chairwoman. “This is our opportunity to thank them personally for all they do for us so that they know exactly how appreciated they are.”
Scheduled to be at First Fridays are the Florence Fire and Police departments; the large-scale display sponsored by the United States Army; the Red Cross Emergency vehicle; Air Evac; representatives from the Marine Corp.; and, perhaps most fun of all, members of the University of North Alabama police department who will allow folks to test-drive a Segway.
Music will kick off on the Big River Broadcasting stage at 5 p.m. with Blind the Sky. At 6 p.m., Boxer Joy will take the stage. The music set will be closed out by Old Sport at 7 p.m.
“Music is one of the best parts of First Fridays because it’s an opportunity for the community to see and hear new local bands,” Duke said. “There’s always something exciting going on.”
Dozens of vendors have registered to participate in the September event. They’ll have a variety of hand-crafted wares for sale that will include jewelry, pottery, woodworking pieces, clothing, and art.
Plans are already under way for the First Fridays for the remainder of the year. Participants can expect to see a pumpkin drop in October; UNA will join the event for the annual Paint it Purple event in November; and the holiday market and Santa Claus will return in December.
