Sarah Wood Mullins died peacefully in her home in Huntsville on Monday. She was 87. The funeral service will be at 12 noon on Friday, July 5, at First United Methodist Church, with visitation preceding at 10 a.m.

Born in Scottsboro to Wayne and Lyda Wood, Mrs. Mullins made Huntsville her home in 1958, where she is remembered as an active member of the philanthropic community. Mrs. Mullins was a founding member of Gothic Guild, serving for 34 years and chairing the Victorian Cotillion in 1996. Among many other organizations, she was also a member of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild for 40 years.

A passionate supporter of the arts, Mrs. Mullins served as president of the Women’s Guild of the Huntsville Museum of Art in 1989 and as president of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra Board of Directors in 1990. The Community Ballet Association honored Mrs. Mullins with the Virginia Hammill Simms award for her contributions to the arts in the Huntsville-Madison County community in 1991.

When not serving in these organizations, Mrs. Mullins could be found participating as an active member of First United Methodist Church, spending time with her family or at meetings of her friends’ Crafty Club, socializing and making crafts.

Mrs. Mullins is survived by her daughters, Carol Ann Russell and Jaime Bostick (Brian); and grandchildren, Sarah Horne (Matt), David Russell, Amanda Bostick and Carter Bostick. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Lyda Wood; husband, James Reid Mullins; and siblings, Virginia Blount, Clayton Wood, and Mary Millican.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Kenneth Turvey Music Fund or Huntsville Youth Orchestra.
