Sally Brown Gerheauser lived a life that could fill a book—and, lucky for us, she practically did. Born in the hills of Missouri in 1943, she grew up tough, farm-strong, and never afraid of hard work or speaking her mind. From trudging through one-room schoolhouses and wrangling farm chores to training to become a nurse at Deaconess Hospital, Sally knew how to get things done—and usually better than the people around her. She met Ed, the love of her life, on a blind date in St. Louis. To know Sally and Ed was to know that they were never just two people, but one heart and one life lived side by side. Their love carried them through Army moves, long separations, and all of life’s chaos—and they always stayed by each other.
But Sally wasn’t all grit; she had heart, humor, and a dash of sass that kept life interesting. She could handle Army relocations, bossy doctors, and even the hot Texas sun, all without losing her spark. Later in life, she threw herself into volunteering, whether at the sheriff’s office, senior center, or with AARP’s tax program, making friends wherever she went. Sally never sat still for long—unless, of course, it was to tell you exactly what she thought. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, laughter, and the kind of wisdom that comes from living fully and unapologetically. If you knew Sally, you knew she was unforgettable — and she’d want you to keep going, keep laughing, and live your life with the same boldness and heart she carried every single day.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ed Gerheauser, 2 daughters, Carrie Shelton and Diane Hirsch, 6 grandchildren, Stephanie Hill, Megan Shelton, Sarah Hirsch, Beth Hirsch, Karl Hirsch, and John Hirsch, and 2 siblings, Jim Brown and Peggy Patrick, along with many other family and friends, who will continue to carry her stories, humor, and love forward. A service will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 3pm at Hampton Cove Funeral Home in Owens Cross Roads, AL. A Celebration of Life will follow at Annabella At Cedar Glen in Huntsville, AL. Fun hats are encouraged to be worn!
