Rose Marie Floyd of Montgomery, AL passed away Thursday January 9th in Huntsville, AL at age 85 with her loving husband by her side.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, William Warner Floyd; her two sons, Craig Miller (Amy), and Jeff Miller ( Kristi); sister, Ann Rush Siscel (niece, Sheryl Brown and nephew, Justin Rush); grandchildren, Grayson, Katharine, Bennett, and Anna Miller, Kayla Ballamy (great- granddaughter, Olivia), and Kelsi Spann; numerous relatives, friends, and a multitude of students from her long career as an educator.
She was born in Birmingham, AL where she attended Lakeview Elementary School. She later moved to Montgomery where she attended Baldwin Junior High and Lanier High School. At Lanier she was active in theatre and choral as well as participating in many social activities.
She attended Auburn University after high school graduation and later received a bachelor’s degree in education from Huntingdon College and then a master’s degree from Auburn University at Montgomery in Education and was a thesis short of obtaining her Doctorate.
She enjoyed a long teaching career primarily at Jeff Davis High School in Montgomery where she taught history and her favorite, Current Affairs. After “retiring”, she continued to work evaluating and conducting testing in various school systems in the US.
She loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. Regular trips to the mountains and the Gulf Coast were her favorites. Other jaunts to England, Germany and the Holy Land were always special to her. She loved to socialize with her friends, enjoying annual trips with The Beach Ladies and its mandatory margaritas, games and puzzles. Her most recent vacation was to Gatlinburg, TN, a favorite of hers with its beautiful views and famous fudge. To her, no matter where you were, it was always friends and family that made things special.
She was also a generous person of faith as a member of First Baptist Church, who always thought of others first. While she taught history for many years, her personal life lessons were equally impactful. She believed that you should always do the right thing, and she lived that way. Her sense of humor was playful, and she loved to laugh and enjoy lively conversation.
While she was known to have informed opinions on most subjects, she also had the ability to disagree without being disagreeable. It was not unlike her to corner an unsuspecting grandchild at a holiday family get together to be certain they were up to date on all national and world events.
She loved deeply, was compassionate to others, fearless in life and positively affected countless lives. She will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held Saturday February 1st at noon at Westlawn Baptist Church, 2515 17th Street SW, Huntsville AL.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Westlawn Baptist Church.
