Dr. Robert Todd Liston Long, born Nov. 2, 1930, Decatur, Alabama, died Feb. 2, 2017. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7th from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home of Florence. The service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Brandon E. Miles officiating.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Keller Weaver Long; son Bryan Lapsley Long; parents Judge W.H. Long Jr. and Sara Lapsley Liston Long, Decatur, Alabama; and brother, Dr. William H. Long III, Franklin, Tennessee.
He is survived by his children, Margaret Long Cianchetti, spouse Bob, Samuel and Robert, Birmingham, Alabama, Weaver Todd Long, spouse Mark Dingwell, Watersound, Florida, Kelly Louise Long, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and Sara Long Miles, spouse Steve, Kelly and William, Simi Valley, California.
Dr. Long received his B.S., Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Alabama, 1951; Phi Kappa Phi, 1955; Comer Medalist 1951; Letterman and Captain Varsity Wrestling, Auburn University. M.D. – University of Alabama School of Medicine; President Alpha Omega Alpha 1955. Internship and Residency, General and Thoracic Surgery, Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St Louis, MO, 1955-60; NIH Fellow, Cardio Thoracic Surgery, 1957-59. Surgeon and Asst Professor of Surgery, Missouri Cancer Hospital and Ellis Fischel Cancer Hospital, Columbia, MO, 1960-63; Diplomat, American Board of Surgery, 1963. Fellow, American College of Surgeons, 1966. Asst Professor of Clinical Surgery, University of Alabama School of Medicine, 1970-77. Attending Surgeon, Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, 1968-2001. Consulting Surgeon, Colonial Manor, Colbert County, Shoals and Russellville Hospitals.
