Richard Norbin Stone Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on March 15, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Richard lived a life filled with purpose, dedication, and love. After graduating from Mississippi State University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Richard proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he relocated to Marietta, Georgia, where he joined Lockheed Martin. His remarkable career continued as he worked for the Army at Redstone Arsenal and was later recruited by NASA. While working at NASA, Richard contributed to pivotal projects, including the Saturn V main engine, Skylab, and the Space Shuttle programs, leaving a lasting impression on the aerospace industry.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Sara Pryor Stone, with whom he shared an incredible 68 years of marriage. Together, they built a loving family, which includes their four children, Betsy Rouse, Richard Stone III (Dickie), Lynn Benefield, and Jennifer Wallace. He was a proud grandfather to Taylor Rouse, Katelyn Orlando, Alexa Rouse, Jacob LyBrand, Sara Lauryn Socha, John Robert Wallace Jr., Parker Wallace, and Madeline Wallace, and cherished his six great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
A man of deep faith, Richard served as a deacon at Whitesburg Baptist Church and dedicated his life to serving the Lord. His unwavering love for God and his family was the cornerstone of his existence, and he will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and steadfast support. Richard Norbin Stone Jr. will be missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2025, at Whitesburg Baptist Church Chapel South Campus. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Dr. Daryl Craft officiating.
