Richard-Bateman-1457186653Funeral services for Dr. Richard Maurice Bateman are scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, March 11 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Doug Norfleet officiating with Pafford Funeral Home of Lexington in charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Bateman, 87, the son of the late Thomas P. and Martha Dean Crowder Bateman, died late Friday afternoon, March 4, 2016 in Lexington. Maurice a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Lexington, graduated from the UT College of Dentistry in 1952 and joined the US Air Force Dental Corp, discharged from the Korean War as a Captain. Maurice returned to Lexington in 1956 where he practiced dentistry for thirty-five years. He enjoyed playing golf, talking politics at McDonalds and in his later years playing rook and dominos with his wife Peggy and friends.

Maurice was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Marian Jury Bateman and survived by their three sons: Dr. Rick (Sandy) Bateman of Kingsport, Dr. Jeff (Tammie) Bateman of Maryville and Dr. Mark (Jennifer) Bateman of Jackson; seven grandchildren: Marcy (Michael) Simpson, Lindsay (Jeremy) Brady, Todd (Sarah) Bateman, Will Bateman, Dr.Jake Bateman, Ben and Haley Bateman; and three great grandchildren: Hattie Simpson, Kinsley and Lyla Brady. In September of 2008, Maurice married Peggy Britt and he is survived by Peggy and her children: Gary (Amie) Britt of Jackson and Gregory (Barbara) Britt, Carol (Robert) Helms and Michelle Britt all of Lexington; seven grandchildren: Thomas Britt, Brandon (Brittany) Britt, Christin (Robert) Carey, Weston Helms, Daniel (Holly) Overman, David Overman and Madison Thomas; two great grandchildren, Harrison Overman and Jay Thomas. Preceding Maurice in death were one sister and five brothers.

The Bateman family will receive friends at Pafford Funeral Home from 5 – 9 PM Thursday, and 9 AM until time of service on Friday. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 27 East Church St, Lexington, TN 38351 and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eight Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
