Colonel Phillip Joel Lurie, age 82, died at Floyd E. Tut Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville, Alabama, on Saturday, December 27, 2014. The cause was a long battle with dementia.

Born June 3, 1932, in Athens, Georgia, he served the United States Air Force for over thirty eight years, before settling in Huntsville. Colonel Lurie was a decorated soldier with over 20 medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star Medal.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Virginia Lurie, son, Robert (Christy), daughter Sandy, four grandchildren including: Nicole (Aubrey), Austin, Ashley, and Caleb, and two great grandchildren, Harper and Anna.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 30 with visitation starting at 10 a.m., at Asbury United Methodist Church, 980 Hughes Road, Madison, AL 35758. Burial will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and the reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001.
