Phillip Davis Strickland, 46, of Florence, AL, passed away Oct. 31, 2014, from an apparent heart attack. Born to Deborah Ray and the late Billy Strickland on June 24, 1968, Phillip was a native of Florence, residing primarily in the Central community. Upon his graduation from Central High School in 1986, Phillip joined the Marines. His service in the military included a combat tour in Panama. Phillip was known for his charisma and outgoing personality with the ability to tell stories that kept his friends laughing for days. If ever there was a natural-born conversationalist, Strickland was it. He could talk about anything, but his preferred topic of conversation was always music. Well known for his musical prowess, Phillip was one of those gifted people born with an “ear” for music. With no formal training, he could pick up an instrument and play it well. His natural talent earned him much respect from fellow musicians and fans. He could often be seen and heard accompanying local artists on the piano in venues ranging from hotel lounges to Sunday morning church sanctuaries. If he wasn’t on a piano bench, he was holding a guitar. Phillip could play it all. His love for rock-n-roll was only surpassed by his love for Jesus Christ. However, even as a Believer, Phillip’s life was a storied one, full of highs and lows, and on occasion, he was a mess, but he was our mess and we loved him. And, we will miss him until we see him again. Phillip leaves behind two children, Bo and Sydney Strickland of Loretto, TN; mother, Deborah Ray of Florence, AL; grandmother, Jean Strickland; brother, Josh Strickland; sister-in-law, Julia Strickland; and five nieces and nephews, Morgan, Samantha, Jack, Gus, and Charlie. Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Billy Strickland; grandfather, Austin Strickland; and sister, Joanna Strickland, all of whom passed away earlier this year. Any condolences and prayers are appreciated. There will be a memorial service for Phillip on Monday, November 3, 2014, at 4 pm at Spry Williams Funeral Home in Florence, AL, with Eric Barnett officiating.
