Peggy S. Hueter passed away on January 2, 2024. Peggy Katherine Starnes was born in Arab, AL on April 12, 1939, to the late Henry and Annabelle (Elledge) Starnes. She is survived by her husband, Uwe Hueter, whom she married in Huntsville, AL on September 4, 1964; and two daughters, Stephanie M. Dean (John), living in Bradenton, FL and Sonya K. Roth (Marc), living in Huntsville, AL.

In 1957, Peggy began a 10-year career with the Army (ARPA) in Huntsville, while also studying at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, before becoming a full-time mom in 1967.

First and foremost, Peggy was devoted to her family. She met her husband, Uwe, at a party in the early 1960s, while he was still in college, and they dated for several years before marrying. In 1967 their first daughter was born, and their second daughter followed in 1970. Peggy absolutely loved being a mom, and she was a great mom. She involved her young children in all sorts of activities to broaden their experiences and horizons; she also read to them constantly and spent time with them exploring places like Green Mountain and Monte Sano. Who knows how many hours Peggy spent at hot amusement parks, up and down the East coast, while her kids and husband rode the rides. Her unwavering love for her family was the glue that held everyone and everything together.

In 1988, around the time her children were graduating from Randolph School, Peggy rejoined the workforce at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center as an administrative assistant. She rose to the top of her grade at NASA and received numerous awards, including the Astronaut’s Silver Snoopy award which was presented to her by a former astronaut and the Flight Awareness award in Orlando, Florida; this was a highlight of her career. Peggy retired in 2016, at the same time as her husband.

In her free time, Peggy enjoyed walking with the neighbors, reading historical books, watching the news and traveling overseas. She had the good fortune of visiting Italy, Scotland, France, Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, in addition to California and other North American cities with her husband, as he traveled for work. Her favorite trip was to Barcelona, Spain and Bordeaux, France in 2014. And while she did not have grandchildren, Peggy greatly enjoyed spending time with her “granddogs” and the dogs in the neighborhood. Peggy was a strong, independently minded, and loving wife and mother, and she will be missed by her family.

A graveside service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Huntsville Animal Shelter or a charity of your choice.
