3ATHENS-The red, white and blue at Athens Saturday Market on July 2 will be more than red tomatoes, fresh baked white bread and blue flowers.

Patriotic Day at the Pavilion will be celebrated as part of the weekly market to kick-off Independence Day festivities. Market Committee Chairwoman Laurie Glenn said market goers are encouraged to wear red, white and blue as part of the Fourth of July celebration.

Children can bring their wagons, bicycles and strollers decked out in patriotic splendor for the “Most Patriotic” and “Best Vehicle” contests. Glenn said pets are welcome as well.

“Bring your well-dressed and well-behaved pets to compete for the Most Patriotic Pet award,” Glenn said.

In addition, market goers will find a variety of produce, baked goods and more. Tutt & Tutt’s, for example, will have relish, pickles, cornbread and chess pie.

The state-certified market operates from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday from June through August. The pavilion is on Green Street across from The News-Courier.
