Nikki Downing Chenault, a devoted mother, grandmother, treasured friend, and beloved member of the Huntsville community, passed away on July 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 79 years old. Nikki will be remembered for her vibrant personality, infectious laugh, unwavering kindness, and the joy she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Nikki was born on January 26, 1947, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to William Lowe Chenault II and Marcelle Nix Chenault and had a younger brother, William (Billy) Lowe Chenault III. She spent most of her childhood in Decatur before graduating from Decatur High School and attending the University of Alabama. Soon after, she married John Robbins, and together they traveled the country while John served as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. They eventually returned to Alabama and made Huntsville their home in 1980, where they raised their three children. They shared nearly 30 years of marriage.
Nikki also thrived on art and creativity. She worked across media, including stained glass, photography, and quilting, crafting work that showed her immense skills and vision that she shared freely with those around her. She also treasured her work with the Women’s Economic Development Council.
Later in life, Nikki found her greatest companion in her best friend and partner, Lynette Lanphere. Their relationship brought her immense love, happiness, and laughter, and they shared many wonderful years together until Lynette’s passing in 2024.
Nikki lived life with remarkable warmth and enthusiasm. Her outgoing spirit, quick wit, and unmistakable sass left a lasting impression. Even during her hospital stays, doctors, nurses, and caregivers looked forward to seeing her. She never lost her sense of humor or her ability to make others smile, even while facing the greatest challenges of her life with grace and determination.
She is survived by her children, Kelley Robbins, Eric Robbins, and Michael Robbins; and her cherished grandchildren, Alexander Hauck Robbins and Margaret Robbins, all of whom were the pride and joy of her life.
A memorial service celebrating Nikki’s life will be held on Saturday, August 15, at 2:00 p.m. at Church of the Nativity in Huntsville, Alabama, officiated by the Reverend Michael Goldsmith. A reception and celebration of life will immediately follow the service.

Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, Nikki’s love, laughter, generosity, and unforgettable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she now rest in peace, free from pain, and surrounded by everlasting light.
