Neva Pearl Clayton Smith, joined so many of the loved ones who went before her and is now home in Heaven, free from pain and suffering.
She was the kind of person who made everyone feel like family. She spent many years working in the deli (she loved working and did until she could no longer physically do it), where coworkers and customers became lifelong friends. She loved people, loved to laugh, and was always ready to cut up and have fun. Her smile could brighten any room.
She was her three daughters’ biggest fan. She celebrated their accomplishments, encouraged them through challenges, and loved hearing about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Most importantly, Mrs. Smith loved God and leaned on her faith throughout her life. She also set an example of devotion and commitment through her marriage, showing her children what it means to stand by and care for the person you love through all of life’s seasons.
Cancer may have taken her life, but it never took her spirit. She lived far longer than anyone expected, facing each day with optimism and determination. When she was first diagnosed, she said she was going to live long enough to see her grandbaby be born—and she did. Seeing that precious baby was one of the last times she opened her eyes, a moment that meant the world to her and to all of her family.
Her family will remember her or her kindness, her smile, strong work ethic, her selfless heart, and the love she gave so freely. She touched more lives than she ever realized and leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and family.
“We love you, Mom, and will carry your memory in our hearts forever.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vonnie Thomas and Pearl Green Clayton; and one brother-in-law, Allen Garland.
