Nancy Gail ClantonNancy Gail Cottrell Clanton of Athens, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born on February 6, 1942, in Pulaski, Tennessee, Gail was the daughter of the late Mary Francis Cottrell and James Edward Cottrell. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.D. Clanton Jr..
Gail was a woman of strong faith, deep convictions, and unwavering love for her family. She found joy in the simple blessings of life and spent many hours tending her garden, caring for flowers, reading, studying theology, following politics, cooking and baking for those she loved, and enjoying walks. She was an active supporter of Eagle Forum and was passionate about issues affecting children and families.
She is survived by her sister, Kay Cottrell Williams.
Gail is lovingly remembered by her children: Ashlie Clanton Clay, Nancy Blanche Clanton, Andrew Bullington Clanton, Jesse Edward Clanton, Pearl Clanton Lamb, Samuel David Clanton, and John Caleb Clanton.
She was a proud grandmother to David Clay, Paul Clay, John Clay, Elizabeth Clay, Anna Clay, Jacksyn Clanton Coppess, Noah Clanton, Jonah Clanton, Emma Kate Clanton, Josiah Lamb, Nathanael Lamb, Isaac Lamb, Benjamin Lamb, Savannah Lamb, Aaron Lamb, Elijah Clanton, Shepherd Clanton, and Annabelle Clanton.
She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Eliana Clay, Hannah Clay, and Aliza Clay, who brought her much joy.
In addition to her immediate family, Gail leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel with Dr. Caleb Clanton officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Athens, Alabama.
Gail’s legacy of love, faith, kindness, and devotion to her family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Though she will be greatly missed, her family finds comfort in the many cherished memories she leaves behind and knowing she is in the Arms of Jesus.
