FLORENCE-River Bottom Swamp Romp 2.0 is set for Saturday, September 27 at McFarland Park in Florence. The five-mile and three-mile obstacle courses offer more than 30 challenges, from an ice bath where participants submerge into a huge tub of ice water, to navigating ropes over muddy pits, to climbing piles of tires.
“Last year’s event had more than 1,200 participants and spectators, making it one of the fastest growing race events in the Tennessee Valley,” said event organizer Chad Beene. “Who doesn’t like to get muddy and have a lot of laughs? The course is designed to be challenging but doable for all levels of fitness. Our motto is ‘More fun, less run.’ “
Individuals can register, but participants are encouraged to form teams and help each other get through the course, Beene said. Teams can dress in matching costumes or t-shirts to distinguish themselves from others. “The Swamp Romp has one goal in mind – finish the race and do something great. We want teams and individuals to feel a sense of accomplishment.”
The event takes place from 8 a.m. until noon, with a fellowship run for local church groups at 8 and 8:30 a.m. Every 15 minutes, 250 people will leave the starting line. As participants register online, they select a starting time. Entry information can be found at www.upcomingevents.com/theshoals or www.facebook.com/RiverbottomSwampRomp
All participants receive a race t-shirt. Registration is $40 per person with $10 for a kid’s run, a smaller version of the adult courses. Spectators are welcome, free of charge.
This year’s post-race celebration will include a beer garden sponsored by the Pie Factory and On the Rocks, as well as live entertainment.
