Mildred Hightower Webb, age 93 of Birmingham, AL, formerly of Guin, AL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the Fair Haven Methodist Nursing Home in Birmingham.
Mildred was born on March 4, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Jelks and Grace Hightower of Guin. She was married to the late Hermon Webb of Sulligent, AL. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and their spouses. Gilbert and Dot Hightower of Birmingham, and Troy and Emma Hightower of Guin.
Mildred was an extremely social person who loved life and loved people! She was active in school events, having attended Marion County Elementary School and Marion County High School. She was so proud to be a Varsity Cheerleader and enjoyed spending time with her MCHS classmates and for the next several decades, was an active volunteer in organizing and planning for the annual MCHS Reunions with other alumni.
Mildred later earned an Associate Degree in Business from Massey Business College in Birmingham and moved back to Guin where she worked for REA and later, after getting married, she and Hermon moved to Birmingham as he started a long career with the Alabama Power Company.
She lived most of her adulthood in Birmingham and was employed with a few select companies like Farm Bureau Insurance and Greenwald Wholesale Shoes as a bookkeeper, receptionist, and administrative assistant. As a lifelong Methodist, she was an active member of the 67th Street United Methodist Church in Birmingham, then after retirement, she once again became a devoted member of the Guin United Methodist Church for many years.
Mildred, throughout her life, was a volunteer for various social and church related charities, such as prayer circles, meal action committees, and the Dorca service club. She was a voracious reader and lifelong learner; not only with an expanding host of books on her bookshelf, but also there was always a dictionary or encyclopedia nearby that she referenced often to learn a new term or new information. Her culinary skills were amazing, as was her zeal for long dinner conversations and story telling around the table that were infectious.
Mildred is survived by two sons, Terry Webb, Steve Webb (Judith Harrington), and a grandson, William Kelson Webb, all from Birmingham. She is also survived by a host of Hightower relatives who have been extremely supportive of her in all manners. Mildred was known as “Aunt Mildred” to all Hightower, Parker, Trucks, Carlton, Dyer, and Warren family members with whom she enjoyed a truly special, loving, and warm relationship with each and all.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at 3:00 p.m., with Visitation preceding at 2:00 p.m., officiated by the the former Birmingham Third Presbyterian Church Minister, Richard Trucks, and the former Guin UMC Choir Director, Wayne Duckworth, both will be assisting with the services. Mildred Hightower Webb will be laid to rest in the Guin City Cemetery immediately following these services.
Mildred’s immediate family wants to thank the nurses and staff at the Fair Haven Methodist Nursing Home for their love and tender care. Also, in lieu of flowers, persons wishing to make a memorial donation in Mildred’s name, may contribute to either the Fair Haven Nursing Home or the Guin Methodist Church.
The family thanks God for the life of Mildred Hightower Webb and for the wisdom, kindness, joy, and love that she extended to so many.
