Michael M. Dembo, 91, died Sunday. A native of Brooklyn, NY, he was born the son of Abraham Dembo and Yetta Hershkowitz Dembo. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Isadore Dembo and Morris Dembo.
He is survived by his loving family, Regina Roth Dembo, his beloved wife of 63 years; daughters, Margaret Dembo Gore, MD, of Highland Park, IL, and Elizabeth Dembo Miller of Huntsville; sons-in-law, Richard Gore, MD, and Solomon Miller; grandchildren, Isabelle Miller and husband, Pedro Aguiar, Louis Miller, Diana Gore, Elizabeth Gore and George Gore; niece, Rose Dembo; and nephews, Prof. Jonathan Dembo and Prof. Micah Dembo.
While working in Alabama as a surveyor with the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, Mr. Dembo enlisted in the Army shortly after the beginning of World War II. He served in Europe with General Patton’s Third Army as a combat engineer. After the war, he graduated with a degree in engineering from CCNY. He later received a master’s degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. Following several years as a professional engineer with an architectural firm in Boston, he joined the US Army Corps of Engineers. He was appointed to leadership roles in several important defense projects including construction of U-2 airfields in Afghanistan, and development of anti-ballistic missile structures in the Midwestern United States. After serving thirteen years as Chief of the Civil Structures Branch, Army Engineering Division in Huntsville, he retired in 1988, at which time he was officially commended by the Corps for meritorious service.
He was a resident of Huntsville since 1968, and was a member of Temple B’nai Sholom.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 8 at Maple Hill Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the skilled and compassionate caregivers at Brookdale Place and those at Hospice of North Alabama for the care provided to Mr. Dembo over the past months.
