Max Harris – Obituary

maxMax Harris, 92, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the residence of his son, Dr. Joe Harris, in Oxford after a brief illness. Max was born east of Plantersville on November 4, 1923 to the late Luther Harris, Sr. and Maggie Ruff Harris. He graduated from Plantersville High School and entered the service of his country During World War II. He served in the U. S. Army where he was a military policeman and, as a combat engineer, walked from the beaches of Normandy to the Baltic Sea. Max worked for 35 years with Malone and Hyde where he was a salesman, sales manager and a buyer at the time of his retirement. He and his late wife, Rebecca Tanner Harris, who died Jan. 11, 2008, were married in Tupelo on July 27, l945. They were faithful and engaged members of Wesley United Methodist for over 50 years. An avid sportsman, Max enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. A great southern storyteller, Max became a successful golfer later in life and, at the time of his death, was taking guitar lessons. Max was a quiet, gentle and encouraging man whose earthly pilgrimage enriched many lives.

A Service of Death and Resurrection celebrating his life will be held at 11 AM Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Wesley United Methodist Church with a military committal to follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 PM-7PM Friday, June 7, 2016 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors and from 10 AM-service time on Saturday at Wesley UMC. Survivors include his only child, Dr. Joe Harris and his wife, Ellen of Oxford; 4 grandchildren, Joshua Harris (Karen) of Oxford, Jonathan Harris (Lisa) of Nashville, Jordan Harris (Katie) of Memphis and Will Eubanks of Oxford. 2 great grandchildren, Tanner and Carolyn and a great granddaughter due in August. A brother: George Harris of Brandon. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his Wesley Church family. He was preceded in death by his parents: Luther and Maggie, his beloved wife, Rebecca and 5 siblings, Flora Harris Bishop, Joe Thomas Harris, Bill Harris, Luther Harris and Rex Harris.

Pallbearers will be Bill Collins, Tommy lee, Andrew Battaile, Ken Jeter, Errol Tootle and Truman Fry.
