Mary Sue Casteel Waltress, 98, passed away at the Mitchell Center in Tupelo, on Saturday,December 6, 2025. She was born on February 16, 1927, in Walnut Grove, Mississippi. She was adopted by Era and Holly Spencer of Pontotoc. She attended First Presbyterian Church and graduated from Pontotoc High School.
She married James Robert Waltress, Jr. from Fletcher, Ohio. She spent the next years making a home for her family wherever her husband’s military career took them. In later life, she became a caregiver with several different home health companies in the
Huntsville, Alabama area. At the age of 88 when she reluctantly retired from the job she loved.
Mary Sue is survived by her sons, Jim (Lee), Bill and her daughter Beth. She is preceded in death by her adopted parents, her husband, one daughter, May Louise. She has four grandsons: Robin, Jonathan, Colin and Zach as well as four granddaughters:Amy, Kimberly, Jessica and Julia. She also has six great grandchildren: Halcyon, Valen, Orihime, Hannalora, Megan William and Rob and one great-great granddaughter, Bryleigh.
Officiating the service is Rev. Tom Groome. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Robin Waltress, Jonathan Waltress, Colin Waltress, and great grandsons Rob Waltress, William Waltress and ruling elder Gary Kidd.
Honorary Pallbearers: L. Wadelo Waldrop, Sara Bramlett, William Bramlett, Libba Cook, Judy Kidd, Cathy Yeoman, Scott Yeoman, Dianne Simmons, Sandy Kelley, Valen Waltress and Halcyon Waltress.
Memorials may be made to Traceway Retirement Community or to First Presbyterian
Church of Pontotoc.
Burial will follow in Pontotoc City Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in
charge of the arrangements.
