Mary Nell Wilkinson Wood passed away July 7, 2021, in Huntsville, AL.
She was born September 14, 1925, in Memphis, TN to John Tate Wilkinson and Richard Gaston.
Mary graduated from Central High School in Memphis in 1944 and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she joined Kappa Delta sorority. She transferred and graduated from Rhodes College in 1948, although her whole life she was an avid Tennessee fan, whose heart always “bled orange”. Following college, she taught school in Memphis, pausing her career to raise her family and move to Huntsville, AL. She later returned to Memphis and earned a master’s degree from Trevecca Nazarene College. Mary retired in 1996 and went back to Huntsville, where she was an avid reader and big supporter of the Huntsville Friends of the Library.
She leaves behind a daughter, Nancy Wood Ward; son, Mark Wood; and three grandchildren, Ben Ward, Tate Wood, and Marielle Wood.
A memorial service will be held in Huntsville on Saturday, July 10 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 2:00. A private graveside service will follow later with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, TN.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Huntsville Friends of the Library.
