Mary Kate Armstrong Sheffield – Obituary

Mary Kate Armstrong Sheffield, 94, died Thursday, February 20, 2014, at The Meadows while surrounded by her family. She was born August 8, 1919, to Alva Shellie and Minnie Maye Turman Armstrong. She grew up in Mantachie, and after marrying Joseph Ezell “Jodie” Sheffield, they made their home in Fulton. She was the oldest member of Fulton United Methodist Church where she was an active member teaching both youth and adult Sunday School classes. Known as Mama Kate to her grandchildren, she was a homemaker and wonderful cook. In later years, she worked at the Jamie Whitten Center on the Tenn-Tom Waterway.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with the Rev. Phillip Box and Dr. Roy D. McAlilly officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Masonic Cemetery. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home in Fulton is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Joe (Robert) Gosa and Patsy Brown of Fulton, two sons, Bobby (Peggy) Sheffield of Jackson, TN, and Jerry W. Sheffield of Tupelo; a daughter-in-law, Betty Sheffield, of Tupelo; one sister, Nell (William) Trammel of Hewitt, TX; eleven grandchildren, Kirk (Melinda) Gosa, Tami (Jeffrey) Gosa Hunt, Alan Brown, Mary Beth Brown, Lynn (Barry) Replogle, Jennifer Sheffield, Amanda Parker, Margaret (Russell) DeLoach, Bobby “Chip” (Krissy) Sheffield, Jr., Kevin (Laura) Sheffield, Terry Leigh (Skip) Clayton; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Harold “Sonny” Sheffield; one brother, Escar Lee Armstrong; and her parents.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, grandsons-in-law, and great grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wesley Sunday School Class, Dr. Billy and Barbara Collum, Reid Smith, Jack and Wilma Creely, June Parham, and Travis Staub.

Visitation will be from 10 a. m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
