Mary Hanks Huber passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and devotion to those around her.
Born in Lenox, Alabama, Mary grew up on a self-sufficient farm with her parents and five siblings. Her journey of caring for others began early, as she often accompanied her mother to tend to the sick within their community.
In 1958, while living and working in Pensacola, Florida, Mary met Dr. Don Huber, a physician. Their shared values and deep connection led to a loving marriage. Shortly after, the couple moved to New Orleans before settling in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1960, where they built a home filled with love and raised their family.
Once their youngest child began elementary school, Mary returned to college, earning a degree in Social Work from Athens College in 1974. Shortly after graduation, her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with mesothelioma. Despite the challenges, Mary faced her illness with incredible determination, undergoing surgery to remove her left lung and making a remarkable recovery. Undeterred by this setback, she went on to manage her husband’s medical office, where she developed lasting relationships with both patients and staff.
Mary’s nurturing spirit extended far beyond her professional life. She was a source of strength and comfort for family and friends, always present during times of illness or hardship. In 1992, she embarked on an extraordinary endeavor—establishing The Maple Grove Motel, a project that reflected her profound commitment to supporting others. Over the next 25 years, Mary provided shelter and emotional support to countless individuals in need, helping them rebuild their lives.
Her devotion to her family was unmatched. Mary was a true matriarch who cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, offering them unconditional love and boundless kindness. Her warmth and compassion touched all who knew her, and her presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the many lives she impacted.
Mary leaves behind a family that will forever cherish her memory and a community that will miss her loving presence. She is remembered as a true matriarch—selfless, compassionate, and unwavering in her commitment to others.
